A bold design approach to helping middle school students master math concepts and skills.
Carnegie Learning, a leading publisher of innovative, research-based math curricula, recently developed new tools to help middle school students master math concepts and skills. The series, which includes Carnegie Learning Math Textbooks for grades 6-8 and Carnegie Learning MATHia software, is framed within real-world contexts using humor and interesting topics like sports, art, money and the environment to challenge, engage and motivate students to think about mathematical ideas.
ESI Design collaborated with Carnegie to create a bold, engaging and lighthearted interface design for the textbook and software. The design incorporates bright colors and hand-drawn illustrations, featuring characters that students can easily identify with who deliver hints and messages to help them on their learning journey.
The MATHia software has the additional benefit of personalized learning, with a unique path created for each student based upon his/her skill level, and the ability to customize the interface. Students can choose a background color and pattern, their favorite characters to be their “companions” on their math journey, and the topics of their problems (sports, money, art, music, etc.). Incremental rewards such as badges, "high five" animations and Math Wonders – multimedia clips that tie math to the real world – help keep students motivated.
The personalized learning paths, reward system and the visually appealing customizable design help combat student boredom and anxiety about mathematics, while the curriculum – developed to align to the new Common Core Standards for Mathematics – delivers a deep understanding of skills and concepts critical to the successful transition to high school math.
