An interactive web experience that helps visitors save the world’s most treasured places.
The World Monuments Fund (WMF) is a leading nonprofit organization committed to preserving and protecting historic sites around the world. WMF works on hundreds of projects in more than 90 countries, including some of humankind’s most revered sites of architecture and heritage. Ongoing WMF projects include Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Historic Route 66 in the United States. Through its new website, WMF has begun the process of making its important conservation work more accessible and meaningful to a growing online community.
ESI designed the website, customized open source content management system and database to meet WMF’s three key goals:
- to introduce the breadth of WMF’s mission and programs to new audiences
- to encourage visitors to learn more about the value of preserving irreplaceable sites of history
- to inspire visitors to take action and participate in WMF’s activities
To convey the connections between preservation and community building, ESI designed the website so that staff could communicate WMF’s efforts to provide preservation services, community support and advocacy.
The website allows WMF staff to constantly add updates and new content about WMF sites and the people working to preserve them. For example, visitors can now view a Google Earth map to click on WMF sites for full project descriptions, images, media and stories from local perspectives. The website also offers a wealth of searchable content and forums that allow researchers, students and the public to engage more directly with WMF data and staff. Finally, the website also provides new fundraising, volunteer and advocacy resources that give people more ways to actively join the WMF community and contribute to its lasting success.
